ANITA BRYANT PIE INCIDENT

Anita Bryant, an American singer and right-wing political activist, gained notoriety in the 1970s for her strong opposition to gay rights, particularly in relation to the LGBTQ+ community's struggle for equal rights. On October 14, 1977, during a press conference in Des Moines, Iowa, Bryant experienced a significant incident that became a pivotal moment in her career.

During the press conference, as Bryant was speaking out against homosexuality, a gay rights activist named Tom Higgins approached her and threw a pie in her face. The act was a form of protest against Bryant's anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and her efforts to repeal gay rights ordinances in Miami, Florida.

The incident garnered significant media attention and symbolized the growing resistance to Bryant's views. The pie-throwing incident was seen by many as an act of defiance and a visual representation of the frustration and anger felt by the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters.

While the pie incident itself did not cause Anita Bryant's downfall, it added to the public backlash she faced for her anti-gay activism. The incident further fueled the opposition to her campaign and helped mobilize the LGBTQ+ rights movement, resulting in a significant decline in her popularity and influence.

In subsequent years, Bryant's career suffered. Her endorsement deals were canceled, concert bookings declined, and her reputation never fully recovered from the negative publicity surrounding her anti-gay activism. Over time, public sentiment shifted towards greater acceptance and understanding of LGBTQ+ rights, while Bryant's views were increasingly seen as discriminatory and out of touch.

This historic incident was just a part of the broader social and political landscape of the time, where debates over LGBTQ+ rights were gaining prominence. The pie-throwing incident remains a significant moment in LGBTQ+ activism and a reminder of the struggle for equality and the power of peaceful protest.

Bagtazo Loves C'etait BonTemps

I beg your pardon!

Made to Order for All Your Needs

C’etait BonTemps is a Brooklyn based drag performer in a love affair with Bagtazo. During a pop up in Nolita, in Spring 2019, C’etait and his partner were walking by after dinner. The shop was already closed but they browsed the window and vowed to come back. The last day of the pop up, C’etait’s partner came in with him on facetime and cleaned up shop!

Months later C’etait tagged me in a photo and I put together who that mystery shopper was!

All three of us now keep in touch and like I said, we’re in a love affair together.

SUMMER READING LIST

Bagtazo_Summer_Reading_List_2020

Here is a list of my fav books to help you get through quarantine and enjoy the sunshine all summer.

Literature - Novels

I have to share that my husband is an author and all of the books on this list have been given to me by him. I was not a reader of fiction prior to meeting the man. I like to read essays and philosophy and always thought made up worlds in novels were boring until I had a curator to guide me in the right direction with literature.

Astragal_Albertine_Sarrazin

Astragal by Albertine Sarrazin
”
Astragal” means β€œFoot” in French

An amazing story written by a young French girl who herself was a prostitute and died at a very young age. It’s an unconventional love story that ends in tragedy.

I injured my foot the first summer I lived in NYC so my husband gave me this book. Since Patti Smith discovered it, she has written an intro, so you may already be familiar with this book, but if not READ IT NOW.

Bonjour_Tristesse_Francoise_Sagan

Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan
"Bonjour Tristesse” means β€œHello Sadness” in French

Written by the author when she was only 18, this is a great summer and coming of age story. There are plot twists, but the overall listlessness of the novel suits the quarantine mood especially well.

I didn’t mean to make the top two books by French women, but here we are. I love this book, I got so into it that I would accidentally miss my stop on the train when I was reading it.

Joan_Didion_Play_It_As_It_Lays

Play it as it Lays by Joan Didion

You may have already read this book, but if you haven’t it’s a most def, 100% must. Joan Didion Is a genius, her writing is so emotional and somehow detached at the same time. This is a story that takes place mostly in Los Angeles, following a married woman who can’t seem to put her finger on what’s the matter.

The opening scene in this book describes the main character driving the freeways of Los Angeles. When I lived in LA, I would hop in my car during any emotional crisis (of which there were many in my 20s) and drive the freeways, trying to comb the entire city, looking for an answer.

This book hit so close to home for me that I found myself acting like the character: suddenly I chain smoked and drank in bed. (I am not a big drinker at all). Highly recommend.

Rona_Jaffe_The_Best_Of_Everything

The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe

I recently finished this book and it Is GOOD in capslock. It’s about β€œcareer girls” in NYC - and peers into the lives of young women before womens’ lib. It was said to be the first book to openly talk about the secret things people did behind closed doors.

I can’t stop thinking about the characters, they sort of became my friends as I read the book and now I’m sad it’s over and I can’t see them anymore. The book was also made into a film by the same title with Joan Crawford and an all star cast. I haven’t watched it yet, but that’s happening very soon.

James_Baldwin_Another_Country

Another Country by James Baldwin

You may be familiar with this book if you’re a reader. James Baldwin is such an important writer.

This was the first piece of literature I read outside of school besides when I was trying to read classics like Catch 22 during my hand rolled cigarette days. It is so good that I laid on the couch every night after work in San Francisco and read it until there was no more to read.

The story takes place in New York – mostly Harlem and Greenwich Village. It follows a black man and his friends in pre-civil rights America. Before reading this book I felt like all my troubles were mine alone, that no one understood me, and then I read this and realized we all go through it, or worse.

Angels_Denis_Johnson

Angels by Denis Johnson

This book follows two people who live somewhat aimless lives: a single mother with two children, and an ex convict. The characters will become your friends, people you want to keep checking in on every time you put the book down.

This is a precursor novel to Johnson’s very dense and hard to read Tree of Smoke, only it’s a much easier read and honestly just a damn good story.

I still think about one of the main characters, Bill Houston on a regular basis.

Don_Delillo_White_Noise

White Noise by Don Dellilo

You may also have had to read this book if you went to college and took a lit class. I know I did, but def did not actually read it. This book comments on the human experience in post modern America. It is so good that even scenes in mundane grocery stores are of utmost importance.

Consider this book the Andy Warhol’s Campbells Soup Cans of literature.

Literature - Short Stories

If you’re new to reading but really want to, short stories are a great place to start. Trust me, these are so much better than whatever you were forced to read and didn’t (maybe I’m projecting here). In short story books, not one story links to the other one, so instead of reading chapters of a large book, you feel accomplished by reading short stories one at a time.

Mary_Gaitskill_Bad_Behavior

Bad Behavior by Mary Gaitskill

Written in the 1980s, mostly in New York these short stories are from a female’s perspective. The 80s β€œshock value” is very present in these stories, but that era’s vibe is easy to overlook because the stories themselves are timeless and important.

Denis_Johnson_The_Largesse_Of_The_Sea_Maiden

Largesse of the Sea Maiden by Denis Johnson

Yes, that’s right, another Denis Johnson book. These short stories are hilarious, like laugh out loud funny. Just trust me and read them.

Lydia_Davis_Can't_And_Won't

Can’t and Won’t by Lydia Davis

A very important voice in feminism, these short stories will also have you laughing if you’re cynical like me, or at the very least you will never want to stop reading them.

Lucia_Berlin_A_Manual_For_Cleaning_Women

A Manuel For Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin

Also a very important feminist voice, these short stories will help you understand life.

Biographies

Maybe you’re not into fiction. Well then here are some biographies that I couldn’t put down

Naked_By_The_Window

Naked by the Window: The Fatal Marriage of Carl Andre and Ana Mendieta

If you’ve followed along with the Periodical, you know I love Ana Mendieta. I’m not going to say Carl Andre killed his wife, but it sure seems like he did. The book is long, but it’s an easy read and goes through Ana Mendieta’s early life, her move to NYC, meeting Andre and then her ultimate death by β€œaccidentally falling” out of a 34th floor window in Greenwich Village.

Balenciaga_Biography_Book

The Master of Us All: Balenciaga, His Workrooms, His World

I don’t know what made me read this book, but CristΓ³bal Balenciaga was such a visionary, learning about his life and work process somehow helped me. It also helped me stop comparing myself to others, mostly because I’m also a designer and had none of the same experiences or opportunities as he had, so it showed me how ridiculous it is that we ever compare ourselves to others.

Assata_Shakur

Assata: An Autobiography

This book is so important. It’s about Black Panther Assata Shakur - her life, her involvement with the panthers, how she was framed for crimes she didn’t commit, and an ending if you’re not already familiar with I won’t spoil for you. (Just read the book, it’s so good).

This book also helped me come to terms with some of the struggles I had growing up, I’ve never really been good at putting my feelings to words or explaining myself, but after reading how Assata describes her upbringing and her reasons for reacting the way she did to some of the things she was exposed to, I realized I experienced a lot of the same feelings without being able to recognize why. So helpful.

LouLou_And_Yves

Loulou & Yves: The Untold Story of Loulou de La Falaise and the House of Saint Laurent

This book is about Lou Lou La Falaise, who worked with Yves Saint Laurent for almost her entire life. She was a huge part of the company and played a major role in the success of the brand. Oh how annoying it is that men even get to dress women. Anyway, no shade on YSL, he rules but of course I’d never heard of Lou Lou La Falaise until this book, smdh.

WHAT'S IN A NAME: LIV & BIBI GARDEN HATS
Ingmar Bergman’s Persona. 1966

Ingmar Bergman’s Persona. 1966

Our Liv & Bibi Garden Hats were named after the main characters in Ingmar Bergman’s Persona. Liv Ullmann played the vampire character Elisabeth Vogler  and Bibi Andersson played Alma, a young nurse who cares for Ullmann.

If you haven’t watched it, and can bear psychological horror films, I highly recommend for the imagery and fashion inspiration alone.

As I was designing my SS19 collection, I was reacting to society’s internet personas, so I decided to make big, boisterous hats to fit the internet presence our peers have, so it only made sense to also make two hats in homage to the film Persona while I was at it. Being someone who doesn’t always love to wear natural or bleach colored straw hats, I added in black straw options for recovering goths like myself, (or current goths, Diane Keaton, I see you), two of which are very much in homage to Elisabeth Vogler and her nurse Alma.

WHAT'S IN A NAME: PALLENBERG HAT
Anita Pallenberg, center

Anita Pallenberg, center

Our Pallenberg Hat is named after Anita Pallenberg, an β€œit-girl” of the 1960s-70s who continued to be a fixture in the New York and London socialite scene throughout her lifetime, gracing many parties and events while wearing a hat.

Pallenberg was a model and actress, working in Germany, London, New York and Paris. She was born in Rome to a German mother and an Italian-French father. She spoke 4 languages by the time she was a teen. In 1965 Pallenberg became the girlfriend of Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones before the Stones became famous. The two met while she was modeling in Munich and the Stones were on tour. But as the years went by, and Jones became reportedly abusive, Pallenberg found respite with Keith Richards, who she eventually had a 14 year relationship with.

Personally, I don’t usually romanticize the 1960s and 70s, and especially don’t glorify the excess and drug use; but from a fashion standpoint, Pallenberg was much more than an average β€œgroupie” of the time. She had a career before she met the Stones, participated in theatre, and was very much a fashion icon until her death in 2017.

Throughout her lifetime, Pallenberg often wore ostentatious hats, and was almost never seen in public without one, so she most definitely deserves a Bagtazo hat named after her, and what better than one of our most subtly outrageous pieces.

Our Pallenberg is a modern take on a traditional western, with the early cowboy style sloped, pinched crown, but a super flat brim so you don’t feel like you’re in costume.

A lot of times, I assign a β€œworking name” to our hats during the design process before I finalize the style names you see. This particular hat’s working name was the Vaquera, meaning cowgirl in Spanish. But the more I looked at it, the more I saw it as a good unisex hat that nodded to the fashion of the 60s and 70s. After explaining this vision to my friend Rose, an aficionado on all things 1960s/70s, she suggested Anita Pallenberg. And after reviewing her style over the years, I totally agreed.

REPOST: NYT "BIRTH CONTROL YOUR OWN ADVENTURE"

THIS NEEDS TO BE WATCHED.

THIS IS THE STORY OF MOST WOMEN MY AGE (STRAIGHT OR OTHERWISE), AS TOLD THROUGH THE LENS OF BIRTH CONTROL.

SO MANY WOMEN ARE TOLD THEY ARE CRAZY, OR MOODY, OR SNAPPY, OR CRANKY.... SO MANY WOMEN CRY MORE before their period. SOME WOMEN BATTLE WITH cyclical DEPRESSION.

SOME WOMEN ARE LUCKY AND DON'T HAVE PMS, BUT THEY DO HAVE CRAMPS. SOME WOMEN ARE REALLY UNLUCKY AND HAVE PMS PLUS CRAMPS. SOME WOMEN DENY THAT THEY HAVE PMS BUT ALL OTHER WOMEN CAN TELL WHEN SAID PMS DENIER IS ABOUT TO GET HER PERIOD. SOME WOMEN BLEED FOR MORE THAN 7 DAYS. SOME WOMEN BREAK OUT IN THEIR 30S. SOME WOMEN DON'T DON'T GET THEIR PERIODS REGULARLY AND DON'T KNOW WHY.

ALL WOMEN ARE TOLD THAT THESE VARIOUS ISSUES CAN BE SOLVED WITH BIRTH CONTROL. ALL WOMEN ARE ALSO TOLD THAT BIRTH CONTROL COULD BE THE CAUSE OF SOME OF THE ABOVE.

FOR SOME REASON THE VIDEO'S EFFICACY IN TELLING A VERY PERSONAL SIDE OF A TABOO THING MAKES ME BOTH ANGRY AND FEEL LIBERATED. MEN THINK THEY KNOW WHAT WE GO THROUGH BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT BIRTH CONTROL HAS SIDE EFFECTS. THEY HAVE NO IDEA.

MY ENTIRE LIFE (UNTIL I GOT MARRIED) I CALENDARED MY CYCLE TO THE POINT OF OBSESSION, AND EVERY WOMAN I KNOW HAS HER OWN VERSION OF THE STORY IN THIS VIDEO. I'VE PERSONALLY GONE THROUGH 5 TYPES OF BIRTH CONTROL IN MY LIFETIME IN A TRIAL AND ERROR TYPE OF DISCOVERY.

SELECTING BIRTH CONTROL IS ALWAYS SETTLING, IT'S LIKE CHOOSING THE LESSER EVIL. AND RIGHT NOW THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE VERY MUCH PROGRESS ON THIS. THERE ARE NO SIGNS OF OUR OPTIONS RADICALLY CHANGING ANY TIME SOON. EQUALITY FOR WOMEN IS CURRENTLY BEING ENGULFED BY INTERSECTIONALITY, AND STILL WE HAVE GENDER SPECIFIC ISSUES THAT SEEM TO BE LEFT OUT OF THE CONVERSATION... EXCEPT WHEN WE GET TO TALK ABOUT OUR PERIODS, THE ONE TOPIC EVERYONE ELSE WHO DOESN'T MENSTRUATE SEEMS TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE HEARING ABOUT.

SMDH. LE SIGH...

A LITTLE NOTE ON WHY BAGTAZO SELDOM GOES ON SALE

BARBARA KRUGER

BARBARA KRUGER

If you're a shopper (or just follow brands on social media), you might notice that a lot of companies are having sales right now. Generally, companies do sales to move through the remainder of their inventory in preparation for the changing season. Most companies start to have new stock for Spring beginning in February. So, it makes sense that stores and brands want to get rid of as much as they can, especially considering some Fall/Winter items delivered to stores in August.

Bagtazo however, seldom does sales because my products are priced fairly from the start. Most stores who do deep cuts in prices started off with high sales margins so that even when they put items on sale, they're making money. So of course, this puts pressure on all brands to follow suit (even though they don't follow this high-markup model). Because of high early-season markups, this model works for places like J Crew, but does not for the little guy.

It takes a lot of work, raw materials (that we sometimes forget comes from natural resources on our lovely Planet Earth), human power, and so much energy to create products, so I'm saying no to the pressures from corporate, fast-fashion. Plus Bagtazo doesn't follow trends, so if I have stock on a rain hat in summer, it simply gets put away until the rainy season comes again. (And you know, half the world has their seasons inverted, so why should I deprive them of rain hats just because we're dying in the inferno that is the NY MTA)?

Now that's not to say you won't see an occasional sale – I did one on Black Friday weekend in 2017, for example, because I wanted to give customers an opportunity to buy Christmas presents without the headache of rushing orders out at the last minute. But I'm just sayin... I'm not into it as a regular business strategy.

So there you have it. More about my principals. (Those damn things I have for better or for worse). But ultimately, I see it as good for the planet and the consumer. And I don't throw shade on wanting to get a deal, I def shop at Whole Foods based on sales.

WILDER HATS WITH GEORGIA O'KEEFFE – AGAIN!

EL147GOK006.jpg

This summer I hinted of my hats with more Georgia O'Keeffe exhibitions and this month it's finally happening! The beautiful exhibition, Georgia O'Keeffe: Art, Image, Style that was at the Brooklyn Museum last spring has made its rounds to Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.

This exhibition is particularly special to me, because it focuses on O'Keeffe's personal style, and a few of my hat styles were selected to sell in the gift shop to allow visitors inspired by her style to take home a piece of the show. I take it as a huge compliment that my hats are being recognized as fitting with O'Keeffe's personal style, since she's such a female icon.

Anyway, if you're in New England, please go by and check out the exhibition, it's well worth it.

On view December 16, 2017 – April 1, 2018

WOMEN AND FILM

I'm pretty excited to share that I am now a contributing writer to Women and Filma community and exploration of female directed films and representations of women in media.

We've started by taking a few of the articles I've written on Bagtazo's Periodical, and we will continue to re-post relevant articles from the Periodical on Women and Film. I'm pretty excited because the site is such a cool concept, and I get to reach a new audience with my work.

If you haven't already read my article on Meredith Monk, you can check out the reposting here.

Bagtazo's Periodical is an art history blog that I maintain somewhat as an exercise to help me through the design process, and to also help me deal with a lot of the angst I have towards the fashion industry and trends. I studied Visual Anthropology at USC, so it's great that my education has come full-circle and now some of my articles will be posted on a film-centric site.

Please subscribe to my periodical if you're into art history, and be sure to follow Women and Film on Instagram. You can also subscribe to Women and Film to receive updates by following this link and scrolling to the bottom of the page.

WHAT YOU NEED

PAUL OUTERBRIDGE, "BEACH EQUIPMENT," 1936

PAUL OUTERBRIDGE, "BEACH EQUIPMENT," 1936

Dear Diary,

I feel the need to share my disdain for some aspects of the fashion industry. From magazines to Instagram posts, the fashion industry is often telling us what we want and how to be. Even independent companies are guilty of this kind of marketing. I have always had an aversion to this type of message and for this reason, I never read teen magazines, or garbage celebrity gossip, or let the beauty and fashion industries tell me that my 5' 1" body, my frizzy, curly hair, and my resting bitch face don't fit the mold.

In the age of the image in which we are living, I feel the need to speak out against the narcissism this message creates. Love THY selfie, sure... but also, get over yourself. Humans all have warm blood and complex emotions. We all have beating hearts and internal dialogue. AND YET, THE AGE OF THE IMAGE has HELPED create the "me" generation - and I think this generation is one that for the first time, defies age. Women my age and older participate as much as young women do. And there may not be as many man selfies out there, but today, all people are guilty. Plus, it's not just selfies, it's how we perceive ourselves and the messages we send out through media. And today, most messages seem to be, "I'm so special."

Individualism is a farce, none of us are any different from each other in the end. We have different world views based on how we grew up and what we were attracted to, but nothing is unique in the realm of human emotion. Nothing separates us from each other beyond our own self image.

I am constantly experiencing an internal struggle, I make $300 hats and $350 brooches. And yet I want fashion to be accessible. I ask consumers to not shop at Forever21 or H&M, but not everyone can afford Bagtazo. And it's not like Bagtazo is making a huge mark up. The things I sell are high costs because I work with US factories and the workers are paid a fair living wage, and the US dollar value is such that my costs end up higher than if I produced overseas (even with fair wages paid). But I often think if nothing else, maybe my work will inspire others to do something. To work hard and to never betray your taste.

In my perfect world, fashion bloggers aren't just photogenic girls who liked to shop and then started getting free stuff because they had a "good following." They're voices for women who inspire each other to have dreams and work hard. In my perfect world, media from brands DON'T make someone feel like they're doing it wrong if they don't have that product. And I certainly would want luxury brands to create an air of inspiration rather than the sense of exclusion. Not sure if I'm successfully getting this message across from Bagtazo's public outlets, but this is my goal.

Maybe my west coast native idealism is showing, but I do know that I am sick of what I see everyday. I love social media - Instagram and Facebook are how I unwind, how I stay connected to friends and how I get a large majority of information. Tumblr is my guilty pleasure of visual beauty. I'll never knock social media. I will however, hold people responsible for what they put out there, and how they express themselves and the messages of their companies. I am so sick of being told what I want. I am so tired of seeing the same brands at all the 'cool' boutiques. Homogeneity sold as individualism is the name of the game today. And yuck. Just yuck.

The lifestyles sold in media are often shallow and uninspiring. They can make people face what they don't have in their own lives, and thus consumerism is born. And if expensive things can't be afforded, then of course, inexpensive copies will do, because the message we are all getting is that we need these things in order to live whatever lives we're trying to live.

But what we really need is fulfillment, and that doesn't come from having nice clothes, or cool nail art or amazing pottery. It doesn't come from having a lot of followers on Instagram, or going to Europe and Tulum. It comes from finding something you love to do, and dedicating yourself to it. It comes from loving yourself, and sharing love with others. And I also want to go to Tulum and have nice pottery, but WITH ALL THIS "WHAT YOU NEED" GARBAGE FROM MEDIA, I have to remind myself that these are not the things that actually matter FROM TIME TO TIME. They just elaborate my life, but they do not make my life.

I'm not sure how to really end this rant, but I do feel I needed to say it.

I work in the fashion industry and yet, I can't stand major elements that are common place within the industry. I guess I just wanted you to know, if you care to dig deeper than a picture on Instagram, that you're not alone. That there are people in this industry who are really like you, and just want to live their lives and wear things that make them feel good. I make things because I think they're pretty, AND THROUGH MY WORK, I FIND LOVE AND FULFILLMENT, WHICH IS SOMETHING SPECIAL I CAN SHARE WITH THE WORLD.

AND PROBABLY, YOU'VE HEARD EVERYTHING I JUST SAID BEFORE, BUT I JUST WANTED TO REMIND MYSELF AND ANYONE WHO STUMBLES UPON THIS, THAT What makeS us unique is how we express ourselves, but this doesn't come from the BS homogeneity the fashion industry is trying to sell as individualism. It comes from what we say and how we say it.

Down with individualism. Yes to love and meaningful experiences. WE'RE ALL SMART ENOUGH TO NOT FALL FOR 'WHAT WE NEED.'
